Tokayev in Berlin again called for freezing hostilities in Ukraine and called Putin «the most acceptable political figure»

At a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev again stated that hostilities in Ukraine, in his view, should be frozen in order to move to negotiations. This was reported by ASTRA.

Tokayev also said that stopping the war immediately under the current conditions would be unrealistic. He called Vladimir Putin “the most acceptable political figure” for Europe and the entire world.

According to Tokayev, he knows Putin very well and believes that he has the most necessary qualities for the leader of a large state with a complex history. In response, Merz said that Russia is currently not interested in negotiations.

The chancellor referred to the results of the meeting between Germany’s foreign minister and Sergei Lavrov in New York. According to him, this conversation showed that Moscow is “obviously not interested in serious negotiations at all”.

Merz called on Russia to return to the negotiating table and promised to continue supporting Ukraine. In July, speaking alongside Putin in Omsk, Tokayev had already proposed freezing the conflict and returning to the “Istanbul formula 2.0”, and also praised Putin for “maximum diplomatic flexibility”.
