The Supreme Court allowed the operation of a Dodge Ram 1500 wanted internationally in the case of Danila Kosachyov

Private draft

The Supreme Court of Russia, in the case of St. Petersburg resident Danila Kosachyov, ruled to lift the ban on registration actions for his Dodge Ram 1500 and allow the use of the vehicle, which had been wanted internationally at Canada’s initiative. At the same time, the court did not oblige the Interior Ministry to remove the vehicle from the wanted database.

The Supreme Court of Russia changed the decisions of the lower courts in the case of Danila Kosachyov and ordered the Interior Ministry to lift the ban on registration actions for the Dodge Ram 1500, and also allowed its use.

According to The Insider, the dispute began after Kosachyov bought this vehicle in December 2023 in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, and sold it in February 2024.

When the new owner tried to register the vehicle with the traffic police, it turned out that it was wanted internationally at Canada’s initiative.

After that, the purchase and sale agreement was terminated, and Kosachyov himself was also denied registration of the vehicle. According to the case materials, Canada placed the vehicle on the wanted list in February 2024 in connection with a theft allegedly committed on June 15, 2023.

Russian law enforcement agencies requested confirmation of the wanted status, details of the theft, and information about the lawful owner from the Canadian side, but received no response. An examination by the Russian Interior Ministry found no signs of alteration of the vehicle identification number.

Kosachyov asked that the information about the international wanted notice be recognized as unreliable, that the vehicle be removed from Russian databases of wanted vehicles, and that the registration ban be lifted. Courts of three instances sided with him, noting that the data on the theft had not been confirmed by sufficient evidence and was presumptive in nature for Russia.

The Interior Ministry appealed these decisions and insisted that a vehicle can be removed from Interpol wanted databases only at the initiative of the country that placed it on the wanted list, or after the information retention period expires; for Kosachyov’s vehicle, it expires on June 18, 2028.

The Supreme Court, in turn, referred to the need to protect the legitimate interests of Russian citizens who possess vehicles wanted at the initiative of “unfriendly countries”.
