The EU discussed new visa restrictions for Russians and a ban on entry for former combatants
Private draft
EU foreign ministers at an informal meeting in Ireland discussed new visa restrictions for Russians and a ban on entry to the European Union for former Russian combatants. According to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, the idea has broad support among ministers.
Kallas said after the meeting that the European Union is working on new proposals to tighten enforcement of sanctions against Russia and continues to impose new sanctions.
According to her, among the ministers there is “broad support” for the idea of banning former Russian combatants from entering the European Union and tightening visa restrictions for Russian tourists.
She also stated that a number of ministers again raised the issue of using frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine, and the discussion of this topic will continue.
Kallas added that EU countries have promised additional support to Ukraine to help it withstand Russia’s ongoing attacks, including air defense systems that Kyiv has long requested.
Earlier this month, Radio Liberty’s European commentator Rikard Jozwiak reported that new EU restrictions against Moscow could affect children’s camps in Russia, in annexed Crimea and in North Korea, as well as officials responsible for education in territories of Ukraine occupied by the Russian army.
It was also reported then that Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov could be targeted by sanctions, and that Brussels is generally preparing restrictions against 1,600 individuals and legal entities and plans to approve them in October.
