The eruption of Anak Krakatau in Indonesia delayed more than 1,500 flights

At the moment, 1,558 flights are delayed at eight airports, said Indonesia’s Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi. According to him, 170,000 passengers were affected.

Over the weekend, eight airports suspended operations because of volcanic ash. In Lampung province in southern Sumatra and in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, on the island of Java, school classes were switched to remote learning.

The eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano began on Saturday, and by Sunday the situation had stabilized. Volcanic ash rose to a height of up to 6 km near Java and up to 15 km near Sumatra.

The volcano monitoring service notes a high likelihood of a new eruption. Anak Krakatau is located between the islands of Sumatra and Java.
