Paris police bans march by Île-de-France university students’ association Interfac IDF

As Le Parisien reports, the prefecture explained the decision by saying that the organizer, as with previous actions, is unable to “prevent disorder”.

The agency stated that, given the identified risks and for the safety of people and property, this demonstration should be banned.

Interfac IDF proposed holding a general assembly on Thursday instead of the march, outside the Paris Labor Exchange building.

The organizer can appeal the ban in administrative court, and the students have already promised to do so. In a statement, the association condemned “police and administrative repression” and called for “the broadest unity against the government’s repressive dead end”.

The dispute over the route between Interfac IDF and the prefecture began last Friday, when students insisted that the October 17 march end near government buildings, but the police refused.

New actions against the high cost of living are expected in France this Saturday, including calls from the “yellow vests”. On the eve of the protests, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said that to protect against excesses during the October 24 demonstrations, the authorities will deploy soldiers from Operation Sentinelle, who will take over guarding sites and free up police officers and gendarmes. The Interior Ministry is also considering banning unnotified actions and even authorized marches if organizers cannot guarantee that they will take place without unrest.
