Novaya Gazeta stopped publishing in print in 2022 after Russian troops invaded Ukraine.
At that time, the Basmanny Court of the Russian Federation stripped the publication of its media license.
The editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was declared a “foreign agent” in 2023.
The new wording from the Ministry of Justice in the published list does not specify additional grounds for including Novaya Gazeta and the other individuals in the registry.
