Berlin Brandenburg Airport briefly suspended operations because of a drone

According to dpa, the unmanned aerial vehicle was spotted in the airport area at 20:00 local time, after which Germany’s air traffic control service DFS first closed the northern runway and then the southern one.

The restrictions were lifted at 21:05. According to dpa, Berlin Brandenburg remains the leader among Germany’s airports in the number of spotted unmanned aerial vehicles.

In the first six months of 2026, air traffic control recorded 28 drones there, and in seven cases this forced the airport to close for arriving and departing flights.

For the whole of 2025, only eight unmanned aerial vehicles were recorded at Berlin Airport and in the surrounding area. In August 2026, a drone with explosives attached to it was found at Leipzig Airport near a Ukrainian An-124 transport aircraft carrying ammunition.

It later became known that there were several drones. On September 1, the German authorities officially accused Russia of attempting sabotage at the airport, and Moscow rejected these accusations.
