In Asheville, North Carolina, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov at the G20 summit of finance ministers and central bank governors. For Siluanov, this is his first participation in such a forum since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

At the meeting, they discussed Donald Trump’s plan to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. The sides also talked about economic cooperation between Russia and the United States.

Siluanov’s participation in the summit sparked protests from European countries. Germany’s vice chancellor and finance minister Lars Klingbeil and some of his European colleagues threatened to boycott the traditional group photo of the ministers if Siluanov were in it.

In the end, Siluanov did not take part in the group photo. His visit to the summit was not announced in advance.
