YANOS in the Yaroslavl region stopped oil refining after a drone attack

Private draft

The Slavneft-Yaroslavnefteorgsintez plant (YANOS) in the Yaroslavl region stopped oil refining on September 17 after an attack by Ukrainian drones, Reuters was told by four industry sources. Governor Mikhail Yevrayev wrote about the downing of 65 drones, damage to the refinery, and the absence of casualties and injuries.

According to Reuters’ sources, the AVT-3 primary oil refining unit at YANOS, with a capacity of 17,140 tons per day, has been damaged; it accounts for about 40% of the plant’s capacity. In total, the plant has three primary refining units: AVT-3, AT-4 with a nominal capacity of 11,430 tons per day, or 27% of total capacity, and AVT-4 with a capacity of 14,300 tons per day, or 33% of total capacity. By the time of the new strike, AVT-4 was already under repair after damage sustained in the August 28 attack.

Mikhail Yevrayev said in a Telegram channel that a major drone raid had been repelled and wrote that 65 drones were shot down over the region, there were no casualties or injuries, and the oil refinery was damaged. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced the strike on the Yaroslavl refinery. The plant is located about 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow.

YANOS belongs to Slavneft, which is jointly controlled on a 50/50 basis by Rosneft and Gazprom Neft. The plant’s capacity is 300,000 barrels per day, or 15 million tons of oil per year. In 2024, the plant processed 14.9 million tons of oil and produced 2.6 million tons of gasoline, 4 million tons of diesel fuel, and 4.7 million tons of fuel oil. Market participants added that on that day, fuel from the Yaroslavl plant was not offered for sale on the domestic commodity exchange.
