Tusk said there is a risk of Russian «hybrid» strikes on NATO countries on the eastern flank
Private draft
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in parliament that Russia is planning “hybrid” strikes with missiles and drones against countries supporting Ukraine. According to him, such attacks could affect states on NATO’s eastern flank and cause destruction.
Tusk said he is relying on intelligence information. According to him, there is a real risk that drones or missiles could enter the territory of one or several NATO countries on the eastern flank and even cause destruction.
He claims that such strikes may be “accidental” in nature and aimed at paralyzing or, at the very least, weakening NATO’s readiness to invoke the alliance’s relevant provisions in the event of aggression against one of its members.
The Polish prime minister also said that the attacks could coincide with political changes in some European countries. According to him, forces there may come to power that hide behind slogans about peace but in fact call for Ukraine’s complete capitulation.
In recent months, drones have repeatedly entered the airspace of Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. The authorities of these countries said that these were Ukrainian drones that ended up there because of Russia’s use of electronic warfare systems.
On the night of September 15, NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that entered Lithuanian airspace. This was the first time a drone had been destroyed in the country’s history, and later Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said that the drone was Russian.
Tusk also recalled the attack on the night of September 13, when Russian forces struck gas stations near the Yagodyn checkpoint on the Polish-Ukrainian border and a passenger train on the Kyiv — Warsaw line with drones. Not far from the train was a railcar carrying Western politicians returning from Ukraine, and Tusk said that Russia’s escalation is becoming a fact and is approaching Poland’s border.
