Trump signs law on «hellish sanctions» against Russia
Private draft
The White House said on Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump signed a law on “hellish sanctions” against Russia. The document allows tariffs of up to 100% against the five largest buyers of Russian oil and gas and provides for personal sanctions against Vladimir Putin, members of the government, and the leadership of the security services.
The law was promoted for several years by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who died in July. In August, the U.S. Senate approved it by 86 votes to 11, and on September 25 the House of Representatives approved the document by 262 votes to 159, despite protests from some Democrats.
According to the document, tariffs of up to 100% may be imposed on the five largest countries buying Russian oil and gas if the share of Russian energy resources in their imports exceeds 15%. India and China fall under this definition in the text.
The same tariffs are предусмотрены for countries helping Russia evade sanctions, and Russian exports to the U.S. are separately subject to a 500% tariff. Personal sanctions are imposed against Vladimir Putin, members of the government, and the leadership of the security services.
Restrictions also apply to all Russian LNG projects, energy projects in the Arctic, the “shadow fleet”, vessels for transshipping oil, gas, and coal at sea, and persons selling tankers to the Kremlin. In addition, the sanctions extend to the Central Bank of the Russian Federation and systemically important Russian state banks — Sber, VTB, and Gazprombank.
