U.S. President Donald Trump personally greeted Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where the Chinese leader arrived for a three-day visit to the United States. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the sides had agreed to extend the current 11-month trade truce until January 10.

Speaking on the U.S. television network Fox News, Bessent clarified that the current term of the agreement was due to expire on November 10. He said the truce would be extended until January 10.

The welcome ceremony at Andrews Air Force Base featured a military band, an artillery salute, and a flyover by a B-1 bomber. According to the U.S. channel C-SPAN, Trump is meeting a foreign leader at this base for the first time in 11 years; in 2015, under Barack Obama, Pope Francis was received there.

In a written statement by Xi, circulated by the Chinese embassy, no trade deal is mentioned. In the document, the Chinese leader said: “China and the United States should be partners, not rivals”.

Trump and Xi are scheduled to hold talks later the same day. No joint press conference is planned; each side will issue its own statement.

The leaders’ previous meeting took place in May in Beijing. At that time, Xi warned Trump that if the Taiwan issue were handled “incorrectly”, clashes or even conflict could break out between the countries.

According to Reuters, the sides may discuss lowering tariffs in certain sectors, cooperation in combating drug trafficking, and expanding contacts between the military. The agency says Xi is likely to raise the Taiwan issue, while Trump will seek the release of Americans detained in China and will not ease export controls.
