Trump approved the execution of Nidal Hasan by firing squad

Private draft

Donald Trump approved the execution of former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan by firing squad, CNN reported, citing the Pentagon. Hasan, convicted of murdering 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas, will become the first U.S. service member to be executed this way since 1945.

CNN, citing the Pentagon, writes that U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recommended executing Hasan by firing squad, and Trump approved the decision. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said that Hegseth will determine the time and place of the execution.

According to the network, the last time a serviceman was executed by firing squad in the U.S. was in 1945, and the last death sentence carried out on an American service member took place in 1961. The last U.S. Army soldier executed by firing squad was Private Eddie Slovik: in January 1945, he was shot in France for desertion.

Hasan was a major in the U.S. Army and a psychiatrist. In July 2013, he was found guilty on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder, and a panel of 13 officers unanimously recommended the death penalty. Hasan himself admitted guilt and apologized for “any mistakes”.

According to CNN, Hasan is a U.S.-born Palestinian. In 2009, he opened fire on servicemen at Fort Hood who had gathered for medical examinations, and then in a shootout with police he was wounded and left paralyzed from the waist down. He now moves around in a wheelchair. Under U.S. law, a death sentence for a service member must be approved by the president, who may commute the death penalty.
