The Russian Ministry of Justice updated the “foreign agents” register on Friday and added film director Andrey Zvyagintsev, journalist Mikhail Shevelev, Kazakh blogger and activist Yerzhan Turgumbay, video blogger Pavel Ivanov, and the “Anarchist-35” project.
The Ministry of Justice register now includes more than 1,200 individuals and organizations. Being added to the “foreign agents” list means a significant loss of rights.
The ministry says that Zvyagintsev took part in creating messages and materials for an unlimited audience on behalf of foreign agents and so-called undesirable organizations. The Ministry of Justice also said that the director spread false information about decisions made by the public authorities of the Russian Federation and the policies they pursue, and that he also lives abroad.
Zvyagintsev opposes the war in Ukraine. He is the winner of the top prize at the Venice Film Festival and the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, and his films have been nominated for an Oscar twice.
The director’s new film, “Minotaur”, was shot in Russian abroad. France submitted “Minotaur” for an Oscar.
