The Perovsky Court of Moscow Arrested Political Scientist Alexander Kynev in a Drug Case

Private draft

The Perovsky Court of Moscow arrested political scientist Alexander Kynev on September 25 in a drug case. He is charged with the illegal production, sale, or shipment of drugs in a large amount.

Kynev is charged under paragraph “g” of part 4 of Article 228.1 of the Criminal Code, which provides for 10 to 20 years in prison.

According to lawyer Mikhail Biryukov, the political scientist was charged with attempted sale of drugs in a large amount. Former editor-in-chief of Ekho Moskvy Alexey Venediktov claims that Kynev does not admit guilt in the sale of narcotic substances.

No other details of the case have been disclosed, and Biryukov has so far declined to comment in detail. It is unknown when Kynev was detained.

Kynev is a political scientist and one of the most authoritative experts on Russian regional politics and elections at the regional and federal levels. In February, the Russian authorities declared him a “foreign agent”. Posts with commentary on the results of the State Duma elections were still appearing recently on his Telegram channel; the latest publication appeared on September 23.
