The family of Rene Good filed two lawsuits after her death from an ICE agent’s gunshot
Private draft
The family of Rene Good announced two lawsuits against the U.S. government and several members of Donald Trump’s administration after the 37-year-old mother of three was shot dead by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. In one case, relatives are seeking to hold the state responsible for her death; in the other, they are challenging the actions of the ICE officer and senior officials.
BBC News reports that the lawsuits were filed by Rene Good’s brother, Brent Ganger, and her partner, Becca Good. At a press conference on Thursday, Becca Good spoke publicly for the first time after Rene Good’s death and said that their family had been destroyed in front of the whole world.
In the first lawsuit, the family holds the U.S. government responsible and claims that the operation created an “unprecedented environment for state violence”. The document lists assault, battery, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligence, which, according to the plaintiffs, led to Rene Good’s death.
The lawsuit also mentions the Federal Tort Claims Act — a law that allows lawsuits against the government for harm, death, or damage caused by the negligence of federal employees. The second lawsuit is directed against ICE officer Jonathan Ross, who shot Good, as well as White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, White House border czar Tom Homan, and others.
This case alleges that the defendants conspired to interfere with civil rights. BBC пишет, что Rene Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen and mother of three, had recently moved to Minneapolis and was shot on January 7 during a traffic stop.
Immigration authorities said the shooting occurred after an attempt to kill or cause bodily harm to the agents, while witnesses disputed the claim that the officers were attacked. Donald Trump initially blamed Good for what happened, and later called her death a tragedy and said that agents can sometimes make mistakes.
After the release of footage of the incident, which BBC says was viewed by millions, protests began in Minneapolis and across the country. Later, hundreds of federal agents were pulled out of the city, and the operation’s leader, Greg Bovino, was removed from his post; protests intensified after immigration agents killed another Minneapolis resident, Alex Pretti, on January 24.
On Tuesday, Good’s mother testified in Congress and said she had voted for Trump, believing that these agents protect citizens, and now is demanding accountability. According to Associated Press, at least 10 people have died in clashes with immigration officers during Trump’s second term.
