The court in Tbilisi released Mikhail Timofeev on bail of 50,000 lari

As The Insider reported, on October 1 a court in Tbilisi released Mikhail Timofeev, an associate and former aide to ex-governor of Khabarovsk Krai Sergei Furgal, on bail of 50,000 lari — about 1.6 million rubles.

According to lawyer and human rights activist Roman Kislyak, Timofeev must report to the Prosecutor General’s Office three times a week, notify them within 24 hours of any change of residence address and of receiving any documents, and must not cross the border.

Kislyak said: “Mikhail is free”. At the same time, on September 4 the Tbilisi City Court ruled to extradite Timofeev to Russia, and the defense said it intended to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court of Georgia and use international mechanisms.

Timofeev was detained in Georgia in January 2026. According to The Insider, he arrived in the country in March 2024, requested asylum, and stated that he was facing political persecution in Russia, but the Georgian authorities denied him.

Russian authorities accuse Timofeev of involvement in murders and attempted murders of businessmen in 2004–2005 and are demanding his extradition. Timofeev himself rejects all the charges and links the persecution to the political activities of Furgal’s team.

On September 29, the UN Human Rights Committee asked Georgia not to extradite Timofeev to Russia until consideration of his complaint is complete. In a letter, the committee pointed to interim measures under which Georgia must refrain from extraditing, deporting, expelling, or otherwise returning Timofeev to Russia.
