T-Invariant: after drone attacks on Yandex data centers, all three company supercomputers may have been affected

Private draft

According to T-Invariant, after attacks by Ukrainian drones on three of Yandex’s five data centers in the Ryazan, Kaluga, and Vladimir regions, all three of the company’s supercomputers may have gone out of service. The latest site was attacked on the night of October 11: the data center in Vladimir was damaged, and the company completely shut it down.

The Galushkin supercomputer is located in Vladimir. The first two data centers were damaged in Sasovo, Ryazan region, on the nights of October 8 and 9, where Chervonenkis and Lyapunov were located.

Chervonenkis was Yandex’s most powerful supercomputer: after launching in 2021, it took 19th place in the global TOP500 ranking, and then dropped into the second hundred. The second attacked site is in Kaluga; it is Yandex’s largest data center and one of the largest in Russia.

All three of the company’s supercomputers are intended primarily for training neural networks, and T-Invariant links the difficulties in updating the infrastructure to sanctions restrictions. Yandex does not disclose details about the state of the computing machines after the attacks, and two other large company data centers are located in the Moscow region — in Mytishchi and Ivanteyevka.

Outages after the attacks affected users in Kazakhstan, Serbia, Belarus, and Armenia; Yandex Qazaqstan said it is working to resolve the issues. Yandex’s Russian press service warned of possible service disruptions, as well as problems with customer support.

Dodo Pizza reported a technical failure, and according to Sboy.rf and Downdetector, issues were also recorded at Dom.ru, the Pulkovo airport website, Magnit, Lenta, M. Video, Timepad, Yurenta, Vkusno — i tochka, Delivery Club, LIME, Flowwow, and DDX Fitness.
