Summer 2026 in France became the hottest since 1900

Private draft

Summer 2026 in France became the hottest since the start of observations, which have been conducted since 1900, said Minister for Ecological Transition Monique Barbut. She said this on September 3 at the presentation of the season’s climate summary at the headquarters of the French weather service Météo-France near Paris.

Minister for Ecological Transition Monique Barbut said that “we experienced the hottest summer recorded since measurements began in 1900”. According to her, the conclusion was based on the climate summary prepared by Météo-France.

For meteorologists, summer lasts from June to August, and it was for this period that the summary was compiled. Summer 2026 in France, according to Barbut, was marked by several heat episodes.

The minister also said that it is now necessary to understand whether this season will remain “the first in a long series” that will continue to break records, or whether it will become a moment that will help France meet the goals of adaptation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. She made this statement against the backdrop of the assessment of the summer climate summary presented on September 3.
