Former adviser to Ukraine’s defense minister Serhiy Sternenko wrote on Telegram that, according to his sources in law enforcement agencies, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko left the country overnight. Kravchenko later confirmed that he had left Ukraine.
On the morning of September 14, Kravchenko brought charges against the director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), Semen Kryvonos, and suggested that he, as well as the head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), Oleksandr Klymenko, resign. Earlier, on September 7, he submitted a resignation letter amid a new investigation by anti-corruption bodies.
On September 4, NABU announced Operation “Carthage” against a criminal organization that investigators linked to aiding fraudulent call centers and laundering assets. According to investigators, it was headed by the deputy head of one of the structural units of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
As part of the case, searches were conducted in the offices of Kravchenko, his first deputy, and other employees of the Prosecutor General’s Office. It later became known that the deputy head of the department for international cooperation at that office coordinated repairs at Kravchenko’s house, helped arrange a U.S. visa for his wife, and organized the Prosecutor General’s birthday in Madrid.
After that, Kravchenko said that this official would be dismissed from the Prosecutor General’s Office, and insisted that he had nothing to do with call centers and had not used his position to patronize them. Sternenko also wrote that Kravchenko had once taken part in competitions for the posts of head of NABU and SAPO and lost both times, and called what was happening an attempt to provoke another political crisis.
