ShinyHunters claims to have hacked the FBI jobs site and stolen employee data

Private draft

The hacker group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for hacking the FBI jobs site and stealing data on roughly 5,000 current and former Bureau employees. The FBI said it is aware of reports of unauthorized activity on FBIjobs.gov and is investigating.

According to ShinyHunters, access to FBI resources allowed it to obtain data on “a huge number of current and former employees” of the Bureau. To back up its claim, the group showed journalists a screenshot that allegedly shows the FBIjobs.gov site being hacked and personal information on about 5,000 people.

The group claims that the stolen information includes details about nearly all FBI agents and about people who applied for jobs at the agency. Reuters notes that the jobs site has indeed experienced outages recently.

The FBI said it is aware “of reports concerning unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov” and is investigating the incident. ShinyHunters считает the attack revenge for the Bureau’s May statement, which detailed the group’s methods and advised hack victims not to pay ransom.

Reuters пишет that journalists checked the data shown by the hackers, including Social Security numbers, and found matches in at least 10 cases. Among them were the data of FBI Director Kash Patel.

Reuters also links ShinyHunters to a series of recent hacks, including the alleged theft of data from video game developer Rockstar Games and an attack on the Canvas education platform. Under this theory, the attack on Canvas caused widespread outages in schools across the United States.
