Sergey Alpatov left his post as head of the FSB SEB amid an expected reorganization

The head of the FSB’s Economic Security Service (SEB), Sergey Alpatov, left his post for health reasons, two former employees of the security service who do not know each other told Important Stories. The SEB is considered one of the key services within the FSB, and no one has yet been appointed to replace Alpatov because of the reorganization expected in the coming months.

According to one source, changes may begin in October and will affect key services and their leaders, including Director Alexander Bortnikov. Sources say that Bortnikov has long been “asking to retire”, spends a lot of time in sanatoriums, and his duties are increasingly being performed by First Deputy Sergey Korolev.

Among the possible candidates for the director’s post, the interlocutors name the head of the Military Counterintelligence Department (DVKR), Ivan Tkachev, whom they call a protégé of Igor Sechin, as well as the head of the counterintelligence service, Vladislav Menshchikov.

Alpatov headed the SEB in 2021, when Sergey Korolev was promoted and became the FSB’s first deputy director. Before that, Alpatov headed Directorate “M”, which oversees the police, the National Guard, the Ministry of Justice, and other agencies. In that post, he was responsible for the case of police colonel Dmitry Zakharchenko, from whom almost 9 billion rubles in cash were found, as well as for the cases of senior Investigative Committee employees who were accused of receiving more than $1 million from the criminal authority Shakro the Young.
