Rutte: There is currently no immediate threat to NATO from Russia
Private draft
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that at the moment there is no immediate threat to the alliance’s territory from Russia. According to him, NATO is much stronger than Russia and Moscow will not be able to defeat the alliance in the event of a military confrontation.
Rutte said that he does not take Moscow’s nuclear threats seriously. He added that NATO has already responded to the Russian diplomatic note and has treated the threats calmly.
According to the NATO Secretary General, Moscow sent the alliance a note warning of the possible use of nuclear weapons if the Kaliningrad region is attempted to be isolated from the rest of Russia’s territory. The Russian side also stated that in the event of an armed confrontation, strikes would be carried out on “centers of decision-making” in the alliance member states.
Rutte emphasized that NATO is a defensive alliance and called on Moscow to stop its nuclear threats. He noted that if Russia decides to begin military actions against Finland, the Baltic states, Poland, or another NATO country, this would be preceded by a buildup of military forces.
The alliance’s Secretary General also said that the United States will maintain its participation in the defense of Europe with conventional and nuclear means. According to him, NATO will continue to support Ukraine and invest in its own defense.
Rutte added that Russia is experiencing difficulties on the front and is trying to divide NATO countries in order to achieve an end to support for Ukraine. He also said that Vladimir Putin is not yet showing readiness for negotiations to end the war.
