Romania raised 604 million dollars through bonds for blood donors
Private draft
Since the start of 2025, Romania has raised about 604 million dollars from thousands of private investors through a government bond program with higher yields for blood donors, Bloomberg writes. Blood donors in the country can buy such securities with a yield of more than 7% annually — about one percentage point higher than for other retail investors.
The program simultaneously helps the state borrow money and encourages blood donation. Last year, Romania had the highest budget deficit among European Union countries. Now private investors, including buyers of “donor” bonds, provide almost one-fifth of all government borrowing.
Romania’s Treasury chief Ștefan Nanu says the state hardly has to spend anything on promoting the initiative. In 2023, the program was launched in partnership with a popular radio station, and then television channels covered it for free as well. Bloomberg does not say how much money has been raised in total since the program launched.
