Ratko Mladić, convicted of genocide in Srebrenica, dies in The Hague

Private draft

Ratko Mladić, former commander of the Bosnian Serb army and known as the “Butcher of Bosnia”, died at 84, Serbian state media reported. He was serving a life sentence in a UN detention facility in The Hague, Netherlands, for crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide.

In 2017, a UN tribunal in The Hague sentenced Mladić to life imprisonment. The court found him guilty of crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide.

Mladić is considered one of the organizers of the mass killing in Srebrenica in 1995 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the source, the armed forces under his command killed, tortured, and expelled thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Bosnian Croats.

After the end of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995, he remained a fugitive from justice for almost 16 years. In 2011, he was arrested by Serbian authorities and handed over to the UN tribunal in The Hague.

In recent years, Mladić tried to overturn the life sentence, citing his age and deteriorating health. The court rejected his final appeal on August 20.

Emir Suljagić, head of the Srebrenica Memorial Center in Bosnia and Herzegovina, wrote on X that Mladić’s death “does not bring back the dead, does not erase mass graves, and does not overturn verdicts”. He added that it “changes almost nothing”.
