On Monday, October 12, more than 20,000 police officers were sent to schools in Poland to protect students after three attacks with bladed weapons. Police checked 80,000 educational institutions and detained 135 people.
According to Reuters, citing Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński, the large-scale operation began after three attacks on schools and numerous online messages threatening repeat attacks. Polish police reported on October 12 that they had checked 80,000 educational institutions across the country and detained 135 people.
On Wednesday, October 7, in Ostrołęka north of Warsaw, a 19-year-old man stabbed 10 people, including himself. The next day, a 15-year-old former student wearing a helmet with an attached camera and carrying a knife broke into a school in Leśnidoło-Nowiny northeast of the capital, killed a school employee, and injured two teachers.
The third attack took place on October 10, Saturday, at a Warsaw college, where three people were injured. According to Polsat, the attacker was a 21-year-old woman.
Marcin Kierwiński said that more than 20,000 police officers will be sent to schools starting Monday and stressed that there will be no tolerance for attacks on Polish children. Prime Minister Donald Tusk rejected the version linking the attacks to an internet challenge or an organized group and called the rise in violence among young people a “dark trend”.
Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz called what is happening a serious disinformation campaign and promised to investigate a possible “Russian trace”. Police also said that during the investigation they came across a minor boy who created a model of his school in Roblox and simulated an attack on students; firearms, ammunition, and knives were found in his possession.
