New York court sentences Harvey Weinstein to 15 years in the Miriam Haley case

Private draft

A New York court sentenced former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to 15 years in prison for sexualized violence against former assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. He had faced up to 25 years in prison.

Before the sentence was announced, the 74-year-old Weinstein apologized to people who may have been affected by his actions, but again insisted on his innocence. His representative said Weinstein “categorically disagrees” with the court’s decision.

In June 2025, jurors in the retrial found him guilty on the Haley count. He was acquitted of charges involving former model Kaja Sokola, while jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict on the count involving actress Jessica Mann.

In 2020, Weinstein was already sentenced in New York to 23 years in prison in the Haley case and on charges of raping Jessica Mann. In 2024, New York’s highest court overturned that sentence, ruling that violations had been made in the first trial, and ordered a new proceeding.

In May 2026, another trial on Mann’s charges ended without a verdict, and a month later prosecutors dropped a fourth attempt to hear that count after Mann said she was not ready to testify again. Separately in California, Weinstein was found guilty of rape and sexualized violence and received a 16-year prison sentence in 2023.

In June 2026, an appeals court upheld the conviction but overturned the sentence and ordered a new sentencing hearing, because the judge had taken the later-overturned New York sentence into account as an aggravating factor. The first major reports about the allegations against Weinstein appeared in 2017 and became one of the impulses for the MeToo movement.
