Private draft
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv early on October 4 and is expected to announce a new aid package for Ukraine. This is his first visit to Ukraine’s capital since 2025, and in Kyiv he will meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
As reported by Radio Svoboda, Merz arrived in the Ukrainian capital against the backdrop of ongoing Russian strikes on Kyiv, which has recently been coming under drone attacks every day.
At the station, the chancellor said that he came to Kyiv because Ukraine needs Germany’s support in the coming weeks. He also said that “if Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us”, and added that “the Ukrainians cannot be broken by terror”.
Merz is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to agencies cited by DW, the chancellor will announce in Kyiv a new aid package for Ukraine, including weapons worth 1 billion euros and another 350 million euros for restoring the energy sector.
The talks will also focus on joint production of various types of drones, including interceptors, as well as long-range weapons. These plans are linked to Merz’s visit amid new Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital.
Last night, air raid alerts were issued in Kyiv six times. In the Dnipro district, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, drone debris fell on the roof of a residential building; there were no casualties.
On the morning of October 4, the Northern Bridge in Kyiv was attacked again by a drone, and the mayor reported damage to the road surface. In recent days, Russian forces have attacked Kyiv’s Northern and Southern bridges, causing major traffic jams in the city and forcing changes to traffic patterns.
In the city center of Dnipro, Russian forces attacked a telecommunications company building, after which a fire broke out; there is still no information about casualties. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, at least 135 Russian drones were launched overnight, and most of them, it is claimed, were shot down.
On the morning of October 4, Russian forces also dropped several guided aerial bombs on Sumy. Multi-story residential buildings were among those hit, and the number of injured, according to the latest authorities’ data, has reached seven.
