Live Aujeszky’s disease virus found in samples of the Multikan-8 vaccine in Yaroslavl Oblast
Private draft
Rosselkhoznadzor found live Aujeszky’s disease virus in samples from the 20th batch of the Multikan-8 vaccine taken in Yaroslavl Oblast. The agency said this confirms a causal link between the mass deaths of dogs and the use of this batch of the drug.
Aujeszky’s disease, or pseudorabies, is an acute viral disease that affects the central nervous system of domestic and wild animals and in most cases ends in death.
In mid-August, dog owners began reporting the deaths of their pets en masse after vaccination with Multikan-8. The first such reports came from Yaroslavl Oblast.
The vaccine manufacturer, Vetbiokhim, recalled four batches of the drug. Rosselkhoznadzor ordered the 20th batch of the vaccine, with a volume of 60,000 doses, to be withdrawn from circulation and destroyed.
Vetbiokhim has prepared settlement agreements with those affected. The company did not acknowledge a link between the dogs’ deaths and the vaccine, but offered compensation to the owners of the dead animals.
