Lithuania bans Usmanov and Friedman from entering the country for five years

Private draft

Lithuania has banned Russian billionaires Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from entering the country for five years after the EU did not extend the restrictions against them. Both have been added to the national list of undesirable persons, and the ban took effect on September 25.

The decision was made by Lithuania’s Minister of the Interior on the recommendation of the Foreign Minister. According to Migration Department representative Rokas Pukinskas, the restrictions may be reviewed in five years and extended if necessary.

Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry is also preparing legal acts that will make it possible to freeze the funds and other economic resources of Usmanov and Fridman, The Insider writes.

On September 22, the European Union extended sanctions for three years, until September 22, 2029, against more than 3,000 individuals and legal entities linked to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, the EU did not extend the restrictions against Usmanov and Fridman; previously, sanctions lists were reviewed every six months.

After the EU decision, Estonia imposed its own restrictions against Usmanov and Fridman. On September 23, the corresponding order was signed by the country’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna; Usmanov and Fridman had been under EU sanctions since February 2022.
