Lavrov said at the UN Security Council that Russia will not suspend the war during negotiations
Private draft
Sergey Lavrov, at a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine, said that Russia will not suspend the war against Ukraine during negotiations. Before that, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, he met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Lavrov said at the UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine that Moscow will not pause the “special military operation” during negotiations in any format. According to the minister, Europe is seeking such a pause in order to “get a breather and replenish the depleted military arsenals of the Kyiv regime”.
Before that, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Lavrov met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. After the meeting, Rubio said that Russia and Ukraine had expressed interest in a limited ceasefire.
According to Rubio, such a ceasefire could cover grain shipments and energy infrastructure. He also said that the U.S. had invited Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit, which will take place on December 14–15 in Miami.
Meanwhile, more than 50 UN member states stated in a joint declaration that Ukraine had already agreed in March 2025 to a full, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire. The text of the statement was cited by Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, which also quoted a call for Russia to “finally do the same”.
The document says that Ukraine wants peace and meaningful Russian participation in negotiations on a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.
