Russian forces struck Kyiv with missiles and drones on the night of September 8. Two people were killed, and 10 more were injured, said city Mayor Vitali Klitschko. According to him, two of the injured are in serious condition.
The strike came after a three-day pause, which Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha linked to the visit of U.S. President’s special envoys Stephen Witkoff and Jared Kushner. In the social network X, he wrote that the attack began as soon as they left the city.
In the Holosiivskyi district, drone debris fell on a residential building where people were trapped in their apartments, and on an unfinished 26-story building. Fires also broke out there in warehouse premises and on the grounds of a private school.
In the Darnytskyi district, warehouses and a garage were burning; in the Podilskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts, warehouse premises; in the Solomianskyi district, non-residential premises, as well as three-story and five-story residential buildings. According to the authorities, 14 high-rise buildings, warehouses, educational and medical institutions, as well as the entrance to the Taras Shevchenko metro station were damaged.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack powerful and said that Russian forces were striking civilian infrastructure facilities. Russia’s Defense Ministry, in turn, reported a “massive strike” on facilities of Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex, transport and logistics and distribution centers in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, as well as on facilities in the port of Chornomorsk in Odesa region.
Ukraine’s Air Force said that overnight Russia launched Oniks anti-ship missiles, ballistic missiles, 32 Kh-101 cruise missiles, and 166 drones. Ukrainian forces said they shot down two ballistic missiles, 31 cruise missiles, and 142 drones, while hits were recorded in 29 locations. In addition to Kyiv, Odesa and Sumy region were also under attack, where, according to these data, the locomotive of the Kyiv–Sumy passenger train was hit, passengers were evacuated, and no casualties were reported.
