Krasnodar court cancels registration of Yabloko State Duma candidate Vladimir Atamanchuk

On September 11, the Krasnodar Regional Court canceled Vladimir Atamanchuk’s registration in the State Duma elections. The lawsuit was based on information that Atamanchuk had ordered and paid for campaign material from a special election fund, which the court deemed to contain information of an “extremist nature”.

The lawsuit was filed by Green Party candidate Andrey Titov over Atamanchuk’s anti-war leaflet. The court press service said that, in the plaintiff’s view, this violated provisions of several federal laws and that Atamanchuk cannot be a candidate for the ninth convocation of the State Duma.

On September 10, Atamanchuk was detained in Sochi, after which a report was drawn up against him for “discrediting” the Russian army. The reason was the wording in his campaign leaflet, including a call to conclude an “immediate ceasefire agreement”, words about a “brother-killing conflict”, and the assertion about “rivers of blood and an ocean of human grief”.

Atamanchuk said that the wording in Andrey Titov’s administrative lawsuit and in the police report were practically identical. He became the latest Yabloko candidate to be removed from the State Duma elections. 118 party candidates in single-mandate districts continued to take part in the elections in 47 regions of Russia.
