«Kommersant»: the state will stop financing films and series about corrupt security officers and maniacs

Private draft

Films and series in which employees of the Interior Ministry, the FSB, the Investigative Committee, or the prosecutor’s office take bribes or take part in criminal schemes will no longer receive state funding, Kommersant writes. According to the newspaper, the restriction will also affect projects about maniacs and serial killers.

According to two sources at Kommersant in major film studios, this specifically refers to ending state support for such projects. They add that the requirement is not yet planned to be enshrined in law.

One of the newspaper’s interlocutors said that “all producers know about this” and that if it is violated, the next project will not receive state funding. According to him, this mainly concerns feature films, while the situation is “easier” on streaming platforms with series.

The sources claim that the position was conveyed to the Association of Film and Television Producers (APKiT), which includes 46 of the largest Russian film companies, by representatives of the Ministry of Culture and the Internet Development Institute. A source at APKiT, meanwhile, said that no official information about the restrictions had been received by the association.

According to the newspaper, this is not about an adopted law, but about a guideline for producers, which is already being taken into account when working on new projects.
