Israeli Culture Minister threatens to strip citizenship from the directors of «NAZA»

Miki Zohar called “NAZA” “treason” and said the filmmakers are ready to “harm their homeland for the applause of antisemites around the world”. The Israeli Culture Minister said he would immediately begin the procedure to strip Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor of their citizenship.

According to The Guardian, the documentary “NAZA”, co-created with the publication’s journalists, tells how the Israeli army chose targets for strikes in Gaza. The authors say they spoke with 24 Israeli soldiers and intelligence personnel who described guidance systems using artificial intelligence.

On Saturday, “NAZA” received a special jury prize at the Venice Film Festival. Citizenship stripping is possible in Israel, but in practice it is rarely used.

For this, a request from the interior minister, the approval of the justice minister, and a court decision are required. A year ago, Abraham and Szor won an Oscar for the documentary “No Other Land”, which described Israeli military demolitions of Palestinian villages in the West Bank, and in Israel that film also faced criticism.
