In the Suoyarvi district of Karelia, two-way checks were introduced at the Shuya checkpoint

Private draft

At the Shuya checkpoint in the Suoyarvi district of Karelia, two-way checks were introduced on September 19. The barriers are closed and open only after vehicles are inspected.

On September 19, the authorities of the Suoyarvi municipal district reported this in an ASTRA post: at the Shuya checkpoint, the barriers are closed and open only after vehicles are inspected, and drivers are advised to slow down when approaching the checkpoint to avoid traffic accidents.

The publication Daily Karelia clarified that when passing through, you must stop when required and have your documents with you. It also says that refusal to comply with lawful instructions may result in a fine of up to 7,000 rubles or arrest for up to 15 days.

The Shuya checkpoint is located about 110 kilometers from Russia’s border with Finland. There is no classic automobile border crossing in the Suoyarvi district, but there is the Kuolismaa/Inari crossing, which was used by logging companies and raw material exporters.

An ASTRA reader said that the increased activity of FSB officers at local checkpoints became noticeable back in the summer: men and “non-locals” were asked for documents, passports were photographed, and the contacts of the carrier and the guest house were recorded. In June, the head of the neighboring Sortavala district, Sergey Krupin, announced a decision to create a new checkpoint near the settlement of Rautalahti on the Helyulya–Pitkyaranta road section beyond the turnoff to Värtsilä. He said that a routine inspection of passports, as well as passes and permits, was not planned.
