The Moscow Prosecutor’s Office said on October 6 that a criminal case had been opened in Moscow after an inspection of the veterinary vaccine manufacturer “Multikan-8” — the company “Vetbiochem”. The case is linked to a fake quality passport for one of the drug’s batches and was opened under the article on using a knowingly forged document.
Under this article, a fine of up to 80,000 rubles, corrective labor, or arrest for up to six months is possible. The first reports of animal deaths appeared in August, after complaints from dog owners from more than ten regions of Russia.
Deaths of dogs were reported in the Moscow, Yaroslavl, Tyumen, Saratov, Omsk, and Tula regions, as well as in Vologda, St. Petersburg, Ufa, Perm, and Kaliningrad. In total, at least 169 dogs died after vaccination, and owners said that before the shot the pets were healthy, but after a few days they began having seizures, severe drooling, paralysis, vomiting with blood, and internal bleeding.
Some dogs died within two to three days. The owner of a three-year-old dog from Yaroslavl said that after the injection the pet stopped eating and drinking, then lost the ability to walk and soon died: “She was whining, suffering, and I couldn’t help her in any way”.
The complaints concerned batch No. 20 of “Multikan-8”, which Rosselkhoznadzor demanded be seized and destroyed. A total of 60,000 doses were produced, and “Multikan-8” accounted for about 20% of the pet vaccine market.
After the case was opened, “Vetbiochem” stopped production of the entire “Multikan” line. The company said it is cooperating with investigators, handing over documents, and providing explanations; according to SPARK, 45% each of “Vetbiochem” belongs to Taras Aliper and Ekaterina Rodionova, and another 10% belongs to Diana Palamarchuk.
