In Casablanca, Yasser Mounbir will appear in court over drawings of King Mohammed VI

Private draft

In Casablanca, on September 16, 22-year-old Moroccan artist Yasser Mounbir, one of the notable figures of the local graffiti scene, is due to appear before the criminal court over a drawing of King Mohammed VI. He has been in custody since June 15 and was previously sentenced to three months in prison.

The prosecutor accuses Mounbir of insulting a lawful authority and a public official. The case is being heard by the Casablanca criminal court.

According to the report, Mounbir was summoned by the Casablanca judicial police, after which he allegedly got into a conflict with a police officer. People close to the artist deny this version.

He was first questioned under Article 179, which provides punishment for defamation, insult, or an attack on the person of the king. The main complaints are related to drawings of Mohammed VI that the artist has been posting on Instagram in recent months.

In these images, the king is shown in camouflage, in women’s clothing, or turned into an animal. In another drawing posted online, the monarch is kneeling, while ejaculation is depicted in the background.

Mounbir has more than 12,000 followers on Instagram. His supporters call the case repression by the authorities and link the trial to a rise in cases of “contempt of court”.
