Guterres asked for $1.1 billion to fight the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo

Private draft

UN Secretary-General António Guterres asked to mobilize $1.1 billion to fully cover the humanitarian plan to combat the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He warned that the funds available would last only a few weeks.

Speaking from UN headquarters, Guterres recalled that the humanitarian needs and response plan is estimated at $2.13 billion and is 48% funded, including thanks to a large contribution from the United States.

According to him, without additional funding, key operations will run out of money precisely when they need to be expanded. He therefore called for mobilizing the remaining $1.1 billion to fully fund the plan, although additional resources will be needed later.

The Ebola outbreak was declared on May 15, and by now it has spread to six provinces. As of August 25, the epidemic had caused more than 2,744 deaths and, over three months, surpassed the 2018–2020 outbreak in the east of the country in mortality, which until then had been considered the deadliest in the history of DR Congo.
