Gershkovich wrote that Krasikov may have returned to work for the intelligence services

Private draft

The Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich writes in the book “This Damned Beautiful Land” that Vadim Krasikov, whom Germany handed over to Russia during the prisoner exchange in August 2024, was captured a year later on cameras at the Chkalovsky airfield near Moscow and behind the wheel of a BMW X6 in Moscow. Gershkovich suggests that this may indicate Krasikov’s return to work for the intelligence services.

“Agentstvo” writes about this, citing Evan Gershkovich’s book. According to the journalist, the footage with Krasikov was found in a leaked database of surveillance cameras by investigative journalist Christo Grozev.

In one of the frames, taken in August 2025, Krasikov is at the Chkalovsky military airfield near Moscow. Chkalovsky is located near the Moscow suburb of Shchyolkovo, and among other aircraft, GRU planes are based there.

In another frame, Krasikov is driving along the MKAD in Moscow behind the wheel of a black 2025 BMW X6. The publication says that such a car costs from 14 million to 19 million rubles.

Gershkovich writes: “Did Krasikov really work for the FSB again? Did my arrest give this man freedom and the opportunity to keep carrying out assignments?” In 2021, Krasikov was sentenced in Germany to life imprisonment for the murder of former Chechen field commander Zelimkhan Khangoshvili.

In 2024, Krasikov became part of an exchange between Russia and Western countries, under which Moscow released Gershkovich among others. After the exchange, President Vladimir Putin personally met Krasikov at the foot of the stairs and hugged him, and the next day presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Krasikov is an FSB officer and served in the Alpha special unit together with some of the president’s security personnel.

The Russian authorities have not said what Krasikov is doing after his return. The New York Times previously wrote that Putin considers Krasikov a friend.
