Gates said in an NBC News interview that AI could lead to a billion deaths
Private draft
Microsoft founder Bill Gates said in an NBC News interview that uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence could lead to “a billion deaths”. He also called for AI to be tightly regulated at the legislative level.
The American TV channel NBC News published only excerpts from a long interview with Gates; the full version will air on September 27.
In these fragments, the Microsoft founder again said that artificial intelligence is “strong enough to steer events that, you know, lead to a billion deaths”. He also stated that there has never been such a powerful weapon as the combination of people with bad intentions and the latest AI tools.
Gates emphasized that AI needs to be tightly regulated at the legislative level. According to him, this will create some overhead for the industry, but will not lead to a drastic slowdown in its work.
In August, Gates published an essay on the risks of artificial intelligence and proposed introducing new taxes on AI as it displaces human employees. Earlier, OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Anthropic chief Dario Amodei called for an urgent slowdown in the pace of AI development, but U.S. President Donald Trump and the Chinese authorities did not support these calls.
