30.8% of Russians consider the elections to the State Duma of the IX convocation, which started on September 18, fair, according to a survey by the ExtremeScan research group. More than half of respondents allow for manipulation of the voting results, and the work of the State Duma of the VIII convocation was more often called harmful.
The study was conducted two weeks before the vote in all federal districts of Russia. According to the survey, 32.7% of respondents believe that the results will be significantly altered, and 23.5% allow for an increase in votes for individual candidates that will not greatly affect the outcome.
The work of the State Duma of the VIII convocation, which has been in office since 2021, was called harmful by 40.2% of those surveyed, and this was the most common answer. 19.9% of respondents considered the deputies' activity useful.
Another 7% said they do not know what laws the Duma passed, and 20% found it difficult to answer. According to the source, the three-day voting is taking place with a new electronic counting system from the CEC, and in five regions it is also being held on residential areas adjacent to apartment buildings.
In the State Duma, United Russia has held the majority for 23 years. According to the source's assessment, the only opposition party, Yabloko, was removed from the election at the level of the federal list after the Kremlin noticed that it was becoming a “gathering point” for anti-war forces in society.
The head of the consulting company Mayak Intelligence, Mark Galeotti, believes that United Russia may be allowed to slip a little in order to bring the declared results closer to the likely real ones, while preserving absolute dominance in the Duma. Political scientist Abbas Gallyamov writes that under current conditions the elections have lost all meaning, because the regime has deprived them of competition and substance.
Gallyamov also notes that the real voting results in approximate form will be available to members of election commissions from parliamentary parties. According to him, some of them will pass the information on to party leadership, which will not dare to protest publicly.
