EU agrees on €6.6 billion for military aid to Ukraine from the European Peace Facility

Private draft

EU countries have agreed to allocate €6.6 billion from EU funds related to military aid to Ukraine. The decision was announced by the EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas.

According to The Insider, the money will come from the European Peace Facility, through which the EU finances military aid to countries outside the bloc and reimburses weapons already transferred.

Kallas said that €900 million will be directed to the EU military mission supporting Ukraine, another €1 billion — to new joint equipment purchases, and the remaining €4.7 billion will go to reimburse expenses to member states. She called this “good news for Ukraine and bad news for Russia” and said that Moscow is using hybrid attacks to try to intimidate Europe into cutting support for Ukraine.

At the same time, it is still unclear how much of these funds will go directly to Ukraine: each EU government will decide for itself what share of the reimbursement to direct to new military aid for Kyiv, and some countries have already promised to transfer their share to Ukraine.

Funds related to Ukraine had remained frozen in the facility for months. At first, they were blocked by the previous Hungarian government led by Viktor Orbán, and in early June it was reported that the country’s new authorities led by Péter Magyar had lifted the veto on allocating these €6.6 billion.

Before that, in April, Hungary unblocked a €90 billion European loan to Ukraine.
