China and the US agreed to mutual tariff reductions worth $30 billion following the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States. According to China’s Foreign Ministry, the sides also extended the bilateral trade truce, known as the “Busan Agreement”, until January 10, 2027.
In a statement, China’s Foreign Ministry said the sides agreed to establish a China-US dialogue on artificial intelligence to exchange views on the risks and benefits associated with AI.
The ministry also said that the United States welcomes the arrival of two giant pandas, transferred by China to the Atlanta Zoo in the US. Xi Jinping announced the transfer of the animals at the start of the visit and said that Ping Ping and Fu Shuang would arrive at their new home in the zoo in a few days.
China’s Foreign Ministry reminded that all giant pandas in the world are considered China’s property, and in zoos they are on loan. Beijing uses panda transfers as a tool of public diplomacy and recalls the animals when relations deteriorate.
From September 23 to 25, Xi Jinping’s first state visit to the US in 11 years took place. US President Donald Trump personally greeted the Chinese leader at the foot of the aircraft stairs at Joint Base Andrews near Washington. This marked a departure from more than 60 years of diplomatic practice: American presidents usually do not meet foreign leaders immediately after they land at a military base.
It was previously reported that during the visit, the leaders discussed the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, they discussed the upcoming summits of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in China in November and the Group of Twenty (G20) in Florida in December.
