According to the Russian Anti-War Committee, Chechen activist Mansur Movlaev, who faces extradition to Russia, attempted to take his own life for the second time. This happened shortly after his hospitalization in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on September 15 following the first suicide attempt in a pretrial detention center.
Movlaev’s support group said that in the hospital he inflicted a cut on his neck. They added: “The person is simply in despair. We have no words. We don’t even know what to say or what to do”.
The first attempt took place on September 15 in a pretrial detention center in Almaty. According to his supporters, Movlaev left a note in which he wrote that he was tired of injustice and would not let Kadyrov’s men torture him again.
At that time, Movlaev apologized to everyone helping him avoid extradition and asked them to help Russian activist Yulia Emelyanova, who is also wanted for transfer to Russia. The Russian Anti-War Committee said that Movlaev fled Chechnya to Kazakhstan and has already been under extradition arrest in that country for 16 months.
Russia is demanding that Movlaev be handed over on extortion charges, while he himself calls the case fabricated. In July, a court in Kazakhstan extended his detention by another five months — until January 13, 2027. In December 2025, the Kazakh authorities denied him refugee status, and in September the Cassation Court of Kazakhstan upheld the denial of asylum. In January, the deputy prosecutor general of Kazakhstan approved Russia’s request for his extradition, and the Russian side assured Kazakhstan that the activist’s prosecution is not politically motivated and that he will not be tortured in his homeland.
