Burnham called Brexit harmful for the United Kingdom and announced new approaches to the EU
Private draft
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said at the Labour Party conference that Brexit has brought the kingdom more harm than benefit. He said he would use the upcoming summit with the EU to present options for long-term relations with the bloc.
Speaking at the party conference, Burnham said he would use the upcoming summit with the EU to present the country with options for Britain’s long-term relations with European partners, Interfax reported. The politician also stated plainly that leaving the EU overall has harmed the kingdom.
He emphasized that the United Kingdom needs to determine the format of long-term relations with what, in his words, remains the country’s largest market. Burnham added that at the summit, which will take place later this year, the sides will discuss joint work on immigration.
According to Burnham, London intends to work with the EU on solving the problems of those British industries that have been hit harder than others by Brexit. Earlier in September, he did not rule out including a clause on returning to the EU in the Labour Party’s election platform for the next election.
At the same time, Burnham said that the kingdom should now focus on restoring relations with European countries and on closer trade ties.
