The Court of Appeal in Bucharest lifted the preventive measure of judicial control and ordered Călin Georgescu to be held in custody for 30 days. The ruling, issued in Bucharest, is final.
Georgescu was detained last week in a case involving the creation of an organized criminal group and fraud amounting to €1.1 million. According to investigators, he and two other suspects persuaded a Romanian businessman to hand over this sum, promising to help him obtain a credit line of up to €15 million from a foreign financial institution.
As part of this case, Georgescu’s villa in Mogoșoaia, a suburb of Bucharest, has been placed under seizure. According to Digi24, during searches of the house, investigators found a forged document in which the politician appears as a Maltese senator.
Previously, the court had rejected the prosecution’s requests to have him held in custody, but that decision was appealed. After the hearing, hundreds of Georgescu’s supporters gathered outside the courthouse; Reuters пишет that they cried, hugged the politician, and gave him flowers.
Reuters calls Georgescu the favorite in the annulled 2024 presidential election, in which he ran as an independent candidate. For him, this is already the third criminal case in Romania.
