Bauman Moscow State Technical University Rector Mikhail Gordin advised against sending children into IT
Private draft
Bauman Moscow State Technical University Rector Mikhail Gordin said in an interview with Vedomosti that he does not recommend sending children into IT, because programming skill by itself does not guarantee a long career. According to him, the market in this field has become somewhat saturated, and salaries have stopped growing.
Gordin said that companies in IT now need not just performers, but specialists capable of growing into managers.
He also noted that the routine work of testers and entry-level juniors is being automated.
According to the rector, in IT it is no longer possible to count on rapid and guaranteed career growth based solely on one programming skill.
Gordin compared IT with other fields where the professional cycle can be short, including algorithms and artificial intelligence. He explained that in 10 years, specialists 10 years younger enter the market, and in some tasks it is easier for them to create something new.
He considers higher engineering education more fundamental and universal. According to Gordin, it trains the brain and helps form conscious citizens.
In the same interview, the rector also spoke about the average score of applicants, the university’s revenue, and MGTU agreements with IT companies.
