Since the beginning of 2026, at least 10 people in Russia have died as a result of bear attacks, Life reports. The latest fatal incidents occurred on September 16 in the Kirensky District of Irkutsk Oblast, where a bear killed two wild-gatherers.
On September 12 in the same district, a pensioner who went mushroom picking became a bear victim. In Buryatia, specialists received 27 calls in one day about predators coming out and shot seven animals.
On September 7, a bear attacked a man near the khutor of Khurtaga in Buryatia, after which the victim died in the hospital. Later, another deceased person was found in the Barguzinsky District after a predator attack.
In Krasnoyarsk Krai on September 16, a bear killed a 66-year-old woman near her home in the village of Verkhny Kebezh. In August in the Altai Republic, a bear attacked tourists at a recreation base in Artybash.
It tore apart a tent, dragged a 29-year-old resident of Novosibirsk into the forest, and killed her. The Ministry of Natural Resources cites a shortage of food as one of the reasons bears come close to people: the agency’s representative Tatyana Aramileva said that in Siberia this year there are “practically no natural food sources” and that pine nuts, hazelnuts, berries, and mushrooms have not been abundant.
The ministry also notes that bears are attracted by landfills, open trash containers, and food waste near homes and tourist bases. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, over 36 years the brown bear population in Russia has grown by 2.3 times and reached 307,000 animals.
