Andrey Shabanov’s mother said her son was beaten twice in Penal Colony No. 10

Private draft

Olga Medvedeva said that her son, Samara saxophonist Andrey Shabanov, was beaten twice in Penal Colony No. 10 after complaints about detention conditions. According to her, he is serving a six-year sentence in a colony in the Samara region.

According to Medvedeva, Shabanov is being forced to clean common areas and wash sinks. She claims that after complaints about the detention conditions, he was beaten twice: first by one person, then by several, and Shabanov himself did not go into detail about what happened.

Medvedeva reminded that Shabanov is a person with a disability of group II and suffers from several serious illnesses, including Bechterew’s disease and severe psoriasis. She said that by law he should be exempt from work, and that during almost two years in pretrial detention he did not receive medical care and his illnesses worsened. Instead of the allotted 15 minutes, their conversation lasted two to three minutes because he could not stand by the phone for long.

In one of the letters to his mother, published by Novaya Gazeta, Shabanov wrote that he was in a state of despair and asked for help to be included on lists for a possible exchange. In another letter, he complained about constant humiliation from the administration and cellmates and spoke of a sense of hopelessness.

In June, Shabanov reported that other inmates were forbidding him to use his own bed, the shared refrigerator, and the kitchen, and were also threatening to beat him. In July, he wrote about being beaten by a cellmate, after which the administration sent him to solitary confinement, where he had to sleep on the floor because the bunk bed was fastened to the wall.

In 2024, Shabanov was sentenced to six years in prison for a Facebook post calling to fight against the current authorities, including by donating to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and carrying out sabotage. The case drew wide attention after the court hearing on extending his preventive measure on August 28, 2024, when he took off his T-shirt and showed the condition of his skin, covered with ulcers and spots.
